Meet Melanie Hyman

With a background in dance, movement therapy and yoga spanning over two decades, I offer my experience and insights into the intricate relationship between mind, body and breath. My teaching style combines form, flow, breath work and alignment driven by a passion to empower individuals to access the transformative potential of this very powerful practice.

When you’re not practicing or teaching, what do you enjoy doing?

I love reading, going on walks in our small village with my dog and husband, I love movie marathons...plopping on the couch and watching a double or triple feature. And my best day is one where I wake up and do something adventurous and unplanned, be it a day-trip or a slew of activities that weren't on any schedule but just fall in place naturally.

What drew you to Katonah Yoga?

I was fortunate to be introduced to Nevine Michaan over 20 years ago.  I knew right away after the joy I experienced in my first class with Nevine that I had found my practice and my teacher. It was both practical and esoteric, applicable to life and full of imagination.

Is there a piece of theory that has resonated with you?

I continue to be fascinated by the idea that it is easier to change the body than it is the mind. Start with the body, and it paves the way for the mind to follow. Central to this theory is recognizing habits and patterns, how they shape our strengths and weaknesses as well as how we interact with the world around us.  Recognizing first and second nature, and how to mediate with third nature- a new perspective that can lead to a different outcome.

How have you brought the theory of Katonah Yoga into your daily life? Any specific scenarios you want to share?

Katonah Yoga has always been a way of life for me.  Most recently, I faced a very serious illness that left me bedridden for over 3 months. During the most difficult days, I knew how to shift perspective, manipulate time, and listen to my breath. Navigating the magic square guided me through  some of my darkest moments. Although I have temporarily lost my ability to engage in a physical practice,  I have put this material to work and discovered a new relationship with my  self.  As I navigate healing and apply all of the Katonah yoga principles and theory , I'm witnessing profound transformation in my life.
